Bilasuvar Border Crossing Closed following Shootout between Border Patrol and Armed Group

06/22/2018 (Azerbaijan) - The Bilasuvar border crossing with Iran was closed on Thursday, 21 June until further notice, after an Azerbaijani border guard was killed in clashes earlier in the day. According to local media outlets, a shoot-out erupted when a border patrol warned off an armed group attempting to enter Jalilabad district from Iran's Ardabil province. The suspects fled and remain at large, however, search operations have been launched to track them down.

Those intending to travel between Azerbaijan and Iran using the aforementioned border crossing should take note of the closure and are advised to plan alternative routes where possible. Those in the region are advised to review contingency and security procedures as a precautionary measure in case of a rapid deterioration of the security environment.
