06/21/2018 (Russia) - Prominent opposition politician Aleksei Navalny has called for protests to be held in urban centres nationwide on Sunday, 1 July, to condemn the government's plan to increase the retirement age. The protests are expected to garner a large attendance after more than 1.5 million people signed a petition against the reform. Navalny's supporters have reportedly filed requests for public gathering permits in 20 cities, none of which are in the 11 cities hosting FIFA World Cup matches. Protests in host cities are prohibited throughout the duration of the tournament and security services are likely to forcibly disperse any demonstrations which occur. However, leaders of the veteran liberal Yabloko party and the radical socialist Vanguard of Red Youth (AKM) have reportedly submitted applications to hold protests regarding the same issue in Moscow on Tuesday, 3 and Wednesday, 4 July, respectively.

Members are strongly advised to avoid the vicinity of all protests and political gatherings in Russia due to the risk of opportunistic crime, incidental violence, and police response. Unauthorised political demonstrations are likely to be met with a forceful response from security forces, particularly in World Cup host cities. Travellers should follow local media outlets for updates regarding planned and spontaneous protests and follow any directives issued by authorities.
