06/21/2018 (Afghanistan) - Eight police officers have been killed following two separate attacks carried out by Taliban fighters on Thursday, 21 June. Six were killed and four injured in an attack on a security post in southern Ghazni province, while two were killed and three injured in northern Baghlan province. At least seven Taliban fighters were killed during the assaults. The incidents come amid a spate of attacks as the Taliban resumed operations this week following a three-day ceasefire last week coinciding with the Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday. President Ashraf Ghani has stated that the government will continue to honour its unilateral truce for a further 10 days, though continued Taliban attacks may undermine this commitment.
Afghanistan remains an extremely high-risk environment and all non-essential travel to Baghlan and Ghazni provinces should be avoided. Members conducting critical deployments are advised to operate under the strictest possible security measures and journey management protocols. All movement outside of secure compounds should utilise a trusted security provider and should be undertaken in coordination with local authorities and security forces.
