06/20/2018 (Mexico) - Mexico is to hold a general election on Sunday, 1 July, when voters will elect the country's next president and new senate members. Demonstrations and protests in major urban centres are likely during the campaign period and in the aftermath of the election. There are also many reports of attacks directed by cartels targeting those running for political office. Since September, 113 politicians have been killed, most commonly in drive-by shootings. Politically-motivated cybercrime and voter fraud is also likely to be problem in the run up to the election as criminal groups attempted to use social media to influence voters.

Members in Mexico during the electoral period are advised to exercise an increased level of vigilance and keep up to date with the latest events via local media. Any protests and political gatherings should be avoided to minimise the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence and police crowd control operations. Monitor local media sources for further updates.
