06/20/2018 (Afghanistan) - According to national media reports on Wednesday, 20 June, Taliban fighters have launched an armed assault on an army post in western Badghis province, the first since a two-day ceasefire between the group and the Afghan government was declared for the Eid festival. At least four Afghan soldiers are thought to have been killed in the attack before the remaining garrison fled as the base was captured. The country's president Ashraf Ghani has said the government would continue to honour its unilateral truce for another 10 days; however repeat Taliban attacks are likely to undermine this commitment.

Afghanistan remains an extremely high-risk environment and all non-essential travel to the province should be avoided. Members conducting critical deployments are advised to operate under the strictest possible security measures and journey management protocols. All movement outside of secure compounds should utilise a trusted security provider and should be undertaken in coordination with local authorities and security forces.
