Three Gay Rights Activists Killed in Guerrero State, Criminal Extortion Gangs Suspected

06/20/2018 (Mexico) - According to local news reports on Wednesday, 20 June, three gay rights activists have been shot dead in the southern state of Guerrero. Roberto Alvarez, the security spokesman for Guerrero state, said that the bodies were found on Sunday, 17 June, on a road between Taxco and Cuernavaca with bullet wounds to the head. Mr Alvarez said that evidence suggests that the killings were linked to extortion by criminal gangs. The victims were identified as gay rights activists from the town of Taxco. Guerrero state in a centre for drug and gang-related violence with kidnappings, extortion and killings a commonplace occurrence.

Those in the aforementioned area are advised to avoid the area of the incident in the immediate term due to ongoing police operations.
