Five Injured in Accident at Chemical Plant in Leuna, Saxony-Anholt

06/20/2018 (Germany) - According to local news reports on Wednesday, 20 June, five people have been injured in an accident at the Fraunhofer Centre for Chemical-Biotechnological Processes in the town of Leuna in Saxony-Anholt. Several ambulances, the factory fire brigade and a rescue helicopter were deployed to the site of the accident to take care of those injured and transport them to hospital. The exact nature of the accident and the extent of the injuries are not yet known. A spokesman for Infra Leuna, which runs the site, said that there was no danger to the public. The town of Leuna is known for the Leunawerke, one of the largest chemical industrial complexes in the country.

Travellers in the area are advised to remain clear of the affected area in the immediate term. Those in the surrounding area are advised to remain indoors, keeping windows and doors closed in order to limit exposure to harmful fumes which may be released. Travellers should anticipate road closures and localised delays as a result of emergency response operations and should seek alternative routes where possible. Travellers should heed any directives issued by local authorities.
