06/19/2018 (Gambia) - Two protesters have been killed and others injured after police opened fire on a demonstration in Faraba Banta, West Coast Region. The demonstration was held on the morning of Sunday, 17 June, over sand mining in the area, which villagers believe is not sufficiently benefitting their community. Protesters reportedly prevented trucks from entering the mine, leading to the confrontation with police. A number of buildings associated with the mine, along with the homes of alleged collaborators were burnt in unrest following the clashes. Further unrest over the issue is possible in the medium term.

Members are advised to avoid the vicinity of any protests or mass gatherings in order to minimise the risk of exposure to crowd violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed law enforcement crowd dispersal techniques. Monitor local media for the latest developments on tensions and subsequent protests over this issue.
