Soldier Killed in Ambush of Alleged ELN Militants in Fortul, Arauca Department

06/19/2018 (Colombia) - The Ministry of Defense stated on Tuesday, 19 June, that a soldier has been killed in an ambush in the municipality of Fortul, in Arauca department. The victim was shot in an ambush by alleged militants of the National Liberation Army (ELN). The incident follows the arrest of the treasurer of the "Che Guevara" division of the ELN in the nearby city of Saravena, Arauca department. The soldier was not on duty and was driving a service vehicle when he was attacked.

Travellers should be aware that paramilitary groups including guerrillas and criminal organisations continue to operate in various areas of Colombia and launch frequent attacks against security forces and government infrastructure. Those conducting travel outside of major cities in Colombia are advised to subject all journeys to a comprehensive localised threat assessment and liaise with local authorities to identify areas with active militant and security operations.
