06/19/2018 (Nigeria) - According to specialist sources on Tuesday, 19 June, four people have been killed during a suspected pirate attack on the Tunu flow station in Bayelsa State. Reports state that pirates in four speed-boats attacked the facility, which is run by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), at Letugbene in the Ekremor council area. Soldiers attached to Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) engaged the attackers and a shoot-out ensued during which three soldiers and one suspected pirate were killed. The identity of the attacker is not known but there has been a history of conflict between the local community and SPDC over ownership of the land occupied by the facility.
Those operating in Nigeria's maritime and riverine domain are advised to continue to employ security measures commensurate with mitigating risks in a high threat maritime environment. The threat of piracy applies to the entire offshore and riverine environment, particularly the Niger Delta region. The engagement of maritime security officers is common. Vessels are advised to maintain anti-piracy watches and exercise vigilance at all times.
