06/19/2018 (Indonesia) - According to national media reports on Tuesday, 19 June, a ferry carrying around 150 people capsized on Lake Toba in Sumatra on Monday, 18 June. The vessel is believed to have overturned due to rough weather. Several hundred rescue personnel were dispatched by the emergency services to search for survivors; so far 18 people have been rescued, while one person is confirmed dead. At least 128 people are still missing. Ferry accidents are a common hazard in Indonesia, a nation where many rely on boats to get around. Last week a longboat carrying 43 people sank of Makassar on Sulawesi Island, leaving 13 people dead.

Members utilising ferry services in Indonesia are advised only to use reputable operators and should ensure that the vessel has adequate safety measures in place, including life vests and inflatable rafts. Travellers should monitor local media sources for further updates on the incident and associated search and rescue operations in the area.
