Resident Killed and Missing following Heavy Flooding in Abidjan

06/19/2018 (Cote d'Ivoire) - According to local media reports on Tuesday, 19 June, several districts of Abidjan are currently experiencing flooding following heavy rains in the region. In a statement the Group of Military Fire Brigade (GSPM) has announced that at least ten people have died, and many others are still missing. The floods have also caused significant infrastructural damage to roads, communications systems and healthcare centres. Emergency services personnel have established a pop-up medical station in the town of Cocody to provide first aid to those affected by the flooding. The National Office of Civil Protection (ONPC) has issued a red alert and warns that rain will continue to fall intermittently in the district of Abidjan maintaining the flood risk.
Members in Abidjan are advised to monitor the local media for any weather updates or travel advisories from the authorities that could impinge on travel plans and business continuity. Travellers should be vigilant regarding flash floods and landslides brought about by extreme weather conditions.
