06/18/2018 (Ethiopia) - According to a statement released by the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region Administration on Sunday, 17 June, at least 15 people have been killed over the past three days by communal violence in the towns of Hawassa, Wokite and Wolaita Sodo. The violence is reported to have been sparked at a new year's celebration of Sidama speaking groups, during which youths came into conflict with Wolaita speaking groups. Sidama groups have recently called for their own federal state, raising tensions in the region. More than 80 people are thought to have been wounded in the violence, which has now reportedly been quelled.

Due to the high tensions in the region, members are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to the SNNPR region. Members with essential deployments in the region are advised to exercise heightened vigilance and should monitor local media to increase situational awareness regarding the protests. Adhere to any directives issued by local authorities and report any suspicious items or activity to authorities immediately. Avoid all protests and large gatherings to minimise the risk of being exposed to incidental violence.
