Maximum Wildfire Alert Set for Eastern Municipalities in Algarve

06/18/2018 (Portugal) - According to The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), Castro Marim in the Eastern Algarve, along with parts of Portalegre and Santarem have been placed on maximum fire alert on Monday, 18 June. A further 16 councils, including Tavira, Alcoutim, Loule and Sao Bras de Alportel are already on red advisory due to the likelihood of wildfires in the areas. In addition, the districts of Braga, Leira, Portalegre, Evora, Setubal and Beja are under yellow warning from Monday, 18 June to Tuesday, 19 June due to forecast predicting temperatures to reach up to 40 degrees Celsius in certain places. The risk of wildfire related incidents are significant during the period of June-September, and statistics from 2017 reveals that over a 100 people lost their lives in Portugal due to wildfire incidents that year.
Members in the aforementioned southern parts of Portugal are advised to monitor local media sources for fire-related updates and should follow any directions issued by the local authorities. Members intending to conduct overland travel in the area should be mindful that wildfire-related incidents can take place, and cause significant travel disruption.
