06/18/2018 (Afghanistan) - According to local media reports on Monday, 18 June, a protest march organised by the 'Helmand Peace Convoy' has arrived in Kabul after travelling on foot for 38 days, covering a distance of 700km through Kandahar, Zabul and Ghazni provinces. The activists entered the city at 0800hrs (0300 UTC) and are thought to be travelling to the Eid Gah mosque near Ghazi stadium in the Pul-e-Mahmoud area. The group is demanding a longer-lasting ceasefire between the Taliban and the government and the withdrawal of foreign troops. Although the gathering is small, the march is a likely target for attacks by members of the Islamic State who frequently conduct bombings in the city. Equally the protest may lead to minor transport disruption in the vicinity of the Eid Gah mosque.

Those in Kabul should avoid the vicinity of the protest due to the risk of sporadic violence and militant attacks. Due to the high level of militant activity in the region, members should be aware that Kabul remains an extremely high-risk security environment and any non-essential travel to the area should be avoided. Any operationally-critical deployments should only be undertaken with the highest security and risk management protocols in place. Any travel outside of secure compounds should be conducted with a reputable security advisor and in liaison with local authorities and security forces. All security procedures should be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure that they remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
