06/17/2018 (Afghanistan) - On Saturday, 16 June, the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, ordered an extension of a cease-fire between government forces and Taliban insurgents following its initial implementation to allow the peaceful celebration of Eid. Mr Ghani's government has also offered to provide medical treatment to injured Taliban fighters and has announced that a number of prisoners will be released from state compounds. Thus far the ceasefire has been successful in minimising armed conflict in Taliban dominated areas; however the truce remains fragile and it is currently unclear how long the extension will hold.
Afghanistan remains an extremely high-risk environment and all non-essential travel to the province should be avoided. Members conducting critical deployments are advised to operate under the strictest possible security measures and journey management protocols. All movement outside of secure compounds should utilise a trusted security provider and should be undertaken in coordination with local authorities and security forces.
