06/17/2018 (Ukraine) - According to local media sources on Sunday, 17 June, police have detained 56 members of nationalist groups in Kiev following clashes prior to the start of the annual Gay Pride "Equality March" organised by Kiev Pride. Over 150 protesters had sought to block the route of the march through the centre of the city. Clashes broke out when riot police moved in to clear the street, the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and made several arrests. Over 3,000 people are expected to attend this year's Equality March, an annual event which was disrupted by violent attacks in 2015, but has passed off relatively peacefully over the past two years.

Members are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of the event due to the risk of exposure to incidental violence as well as heavy-handed police crowd control methods. Those in Kiev should anticipate localised travel disruption in the vicinity of the events and should factor this into travel itineraries, planning alternative routes where possible. Monitor local media reports for further information regarding the location of the event and associated disruption.
