Surge in Gang Activity Reported in Mushin, Idi-Araba, and Surulere Neighbourhoods of Lagos

05/23/2018 (Nigeria) - Residents of the Lagos neighbourhoods of Mushin, Idi-Araba, and Surulere issued a plea to the Lagos state police command and the state government on Monday, 21 May, to intervene following a recent surge in criminal activity in the area. The increased gang activity has reportedly involved regular armed robberies, harassment, looting, vandalism, and arson. Incidents have been reported on Ajose, Alfa Nda, Akanro, Dosunmu and Lawanson streets.

Those in Lagos are advised to avoid the aforementioned areas in the immediate term due to the ongoing threat of exposure to criminal activity. Travellers are reminded that such criminal activity is prevalent in Lagos. Attackers are often armed and will not hesitate to resort to violence if met with resistance. Clients are advised to exercise a high level of situational awareness, keep car doors locked throughout journeys, avoid high-crime areas where possible, and refrain from obvious displays of wealth. Any suspicious activity should be immediately reported to police.
