Massive Security Operation at Tenis Market, Mexico City's Tepito Area

05/23/2018 (Mexico) - Local media sources report that, on Tuesday, 22 May, at least five members of the Secretariat of Public Security of Mexico City (SPSMC) were injured as a result of a security operation carried out in Tenis Market, in Mexico City's Tepito area. The operation, which targeted traders carrying out illegal activities, started at approximately 2230hrs (0330 UTC, 23 May) and resulted in violent clashes between security forces and traders. Sources report that gunfire was heard during the security operation, barricades were erected and furniture was set on fire notably on Calle de Tenochtitlan.

Those in Mexico City are advised to avoid the area of the incident in the immediate term due to the ongoing security operations.Travellers should be aware of the potential for localised disruption in the area and should account for this in itineraries, planning alternative routes to avoid the area where possible. Travellers are advised to exercise good situational awareness, especially in unfamiliar environments and maintain a low profile.
