05/23/2018 (Mali) - Local media sources report that on Monday, 21 May, alleged Islamic extremist militants have killed two people in Waaka village, located in Tenenkou Cercle, Mopti Region. Sources report that the assailants carried out a targeted terror operation to deter inhabitants of the area from opposing their strategic interests. Eyewitnesses stated that before leaving the site of the incident, the assailants threatened villagers by claiming they would return to kill the "enemies of Islam". The security environment in Mali remains complex, particularly in the north and central regions despite a French-led intervention launched in 2013 to oust Islamic militants.
Those with operationally-critical travel requirements in Mali should first conduct a thorough localised threat assessment and subject all movement to stringent security risk management procedures. Travellers are advised to liaise with security forces and local authorities to identify areas with ongoing security operations in the region. Contingency measures should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
