05/22/2018 (United States) - Local media reports indicate that the latest eruption of Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano has prompted the evacuation of more than 2,000 residents on Tuesday, 22 May. More than 20 fissures have appeared in recent weeks, spewing lava, steam, and ash, and threatening surrounding residential areas. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), magma has begun pouring from the volcano into the Pacific Ocean and subsequently producing toxic fumes. The USGS has advised residents located near affected coastal areas to remain indoors unless instructed otherwise, and to immediately seek medical attention in the event of skin irritation or respiratory problems. The Hawaii County Civil Defense has advised residents of Big Island to remain alert to further announcements and to be prepared to evacuate immediately in the event of further eruptions or fissures. The island has also been struck by a series of earthquakes amid the increased volcanic activity.

Members in Hawaii are advised to maintain an increased level of vigilance due to potential eruptions and further earthquakes and should monitor local media sources in order to remain apprised of any government advisories. Any directives issued by local authorities should be adhered to, including evacuation orders. Travellers should avoid non-essential travel in the vicinity of affected areas in the medium term.
