Multiple Casualties Reported following IED Attack in Kandahar City; Avoid District 4

05/22/2018 (Afghanistan) - Emerging social media feeds report that on Tuesday, 22 May, an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded at a National Directorate of Security checkpoint in the district 4 of Kandahar city. At least six people have been killed, and several others injured are currently being transferred to medical facilities. The preliminary information reports that the cause of the blast is the result of a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED). Sources indicate that the suicide bomber was on-board a Tunisian registered vehicle. Further information is due to be available soon.
Travel to the Kandahar region should be limited to operationally-critical deployments and only conducted following a thorough localised threat assessment and all movement is subject to stringent security risk management procedures. Travellers are advised to liaise with security forces to identify and avoid areas with high potential for attacks. Contingency measures should be continually reviewed and updated so as to remain commensurate to the local threat environment.
