Small Explosive Device Explodes outside Refugee Shelter in Appiano, Province of Como

05/22/2018 (Italy) - Local media sources report that on Monday, 21 May, a small explosive device exploded at approximately 0400hs (0300 UTC) outside of a shelter for asylum seekers located in Appiano, Province of Como. No casualties or any damages to buildings were reported. Sources report that the security forces found a letter on site containing anti-immigrant rhetoric. Authorities believe that xenophobic far-right activists are responsible for the attack even if no group has made any statement to claim responsibility at this time.

Those in the Province of Como should be aware of the risks related to far-right activities targeting asylum-seekers centres. Travellers should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any security operations and immediately report any suspicious items or activity to security forces.
