Alleged Herdsmen Attack Security Forces Patrolling Benue State's Logo Local Government Area; Fatalities Reported

05/22/2018 (Nigeria) - Authorities stated on Tuesday, 22 May, that one security personnel of the State Security Service (SSS) has been killed and two others have been abducted while they were conducting security operations in Logo Local Government Area, Benue State. The assailants are alleged herdsmen operating in the aforementioned area. Search operations are ongoing to locate the missing security personnel. Security forces are patrolling Buena State as part of the Operation Whirl Stroke, aiming at countering armed herdsmen and militia groups operating within the region.
Given the heightened tensions and an increased threat of intercommunal violence and banditry at this time, those in Benue State are advised to remain extremely vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity to security forces. Operationally-critical travel in rural areas should be conducted following a comprehensive localised threat assessment. Travellers should regularly review security management protocols to ensure that they remain commensurate with the evolving local threat environment.
