Measles Outbreak Intensifies over Fukuoka, Okinawa and Aichi prefectures

05/22/2018 (Japan) - Local media sources report on Tuesday, 22 May, that the ongoing outbreak of measles is intensifying over the prefectures of Fukuoka, Okinawa and Aichi. Authorities have warned that the risk of infection is high in tourist locations. At this time, at least 300 cases have been identified. The National Institute of Infectious Diseases stated on 16 May, that 149 cases have been affected in Fujuoka Prefecture, 85 in Okinawa Prefecture, 24 in Aichi Prefecture, 11 in Tokyo prefecture and 6 in Saitama Prefecture. The outbreak has been identified as originating from Taiwan and brought to Japan by travellers via the Okinawa Prefecture.

Measles is a highly prevalent disease throughout the world and extremely contagious, but is largely preventable through vaccination. Two doses of MMR vaccine, often administered to children, are normally enough to ensure protection. Those travelling to Japan are advised to check their vaccinations are sufficiently up to date pre-deployment. Travellers should immediately consult a physician upon presentation of any of the aforementioned symptoms.
