05/21/2018 (Colombia) - According to local media, anti-corruption activist Gustavo Petro has called for nationwide demonstrations against electoral fraud during the presidential elections on Sunday, 27 May. Mr Petro claims that monitoring by the people is the only way to guarantee an election free of fraud; demonstrators are expected to gather from 1600hrs (2100 UTC) in municipal squares and near polling stations nationwide.
Members are advised to exercise a heightened level of vigilance in public places and near polling stations which are often flashpoints for violence during the electoral period. Those in-country are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime and incidental violence. Monitor local media sources for more information regarding the protests during the electoral period and associated travel disruption.
