05/21/2018 (Argentina) - A national teachers' union, the Confederation of Education Workers (CTERA), has called for a nationwide 24-hour strike on Wednesday, 23 May. The union has also called for members to attend a large rally in Buenos Aires. Participants are scheduled to gather at Plaza de Mayo at 1500hrs (1800 UTC). Related demonstrations organised by other unions will also be held in the city throughout the day. Activists are expected to gather at the Obelisco at 1200hrs (1500 UTC) and at 1300 (1600 UTC) outside the National Congress. The industrial action is being held to call for increased funding for public education.
Members in Buenos Aires on Wednesday are advised to avoid non-essential travel to the aforementioned areas during the march, and to remain vigilant in the vicinity of protests or demonstrations due to the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed police response. Travellers should monitor local media sources to remain apprised of road closures and other security measures associated with the demonstration.
