05/21/2018 (Togo) - According to local sources, a series of opposition protests are scheduled to be held in Lome from Wednesday, 23 May until Thursday, 31 May. Members of the National Alliance for Change (ANC)'s youth wing are expected to take part in sit-in protests outside the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Administration on 23 and 24 May respectively. Large rallies are also planned at the Independent National Electoral Commission building on 30 May and at the Ministry of Transport on 31 May. Spontaneous demonstrations may also occur in the coming days. The protests may be met by a heavy-handed security response as political gatherings have been banned in Lome by the Togolese government.

Travellers in Lome are advised to maintain a heightened level of situational awareness during the demonstrations. Travellers are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime and incidental violence. Monitor local media sources for more information regarding the protest activity and associated travel disruption.
