05/21/2018 (Venezuela) - Nationwide protests are expected to take place on Monday, 21 May, following the landslide victory of Nicolas Maduro in Sunday's presidential election. Reports indicated that protests broke out on Sunday night in the city of Barquisimeto and in the San Martin district of Caracas. Protesters blocked main roads and were met by government forces' anti-riot tanks. Both celebratory pro-government events and large opposition rallies are expected to occur in urban centres throughout the country. Opposition protests will likely be met with a heavy-handed police response. Disruption to public services and overland travel is likely in the coming days.

Members in Caracas and other major cities should monitor local media for further information on timings and locations of demonstrations. Remain well clear of all political gatherings to limit the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime, and law enforcement crowd dispersal techniques.
