Protesters Disrupt Traffic on M5 Highway between Vrygrond and Parkwood, Cape Town

05/21/2018 (South Africa) - Local media sources report that on Monday, 21 May, police and traffic services are blocking access to the M5 highway from Vrygrond as a result of protest activities over the provision of housing. Police forces were also posted at the intersection between the M5 and Hyde Road, near Parkwood. There have been reports of severe traffic disruption on Military Road and heavy traffic on the M3 highway heading to Cape Town. Security forces reportedly intervened after protesters set tyres on fire and obstructed circulation between Vrygrond and Parkwood. The situation is currently reported as being confrontational between protesters and security forces on site.

Travellers in the area are advised to avoid the area of demonstrations in order to minimise the risk of exposure to crowd disturbances, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed police response. Members are further advised to anticipate localised travel disruptions resulting from a heightened security presence.
