05/20/2018 (Kenya) - A protest in support of a Sudanese girl who was sentenced to death for killing her husband, in Uhuru Park, Nairobi, has been dispersed by police according to local media reports on Sunday, 20 May. The protesters, who were stopped for not obtaining a public demonstration permit, claim that the woman, Noura Hussein, was acting in self-defence, after she was attacked by her husband. The case has gained a lot of support from women's rights groups in Kenya who have disavowed the tradition of arranged marriages for young girls. Further protests over the issue are likely in the coming days as the case is referred to the appeals court.

Members in Nairobi should minimise time spent near demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances, incidental violence, and police crowd dispersal activities. Monitor local media sources for further protests on the issue and associated disruption, and immediately heed any directives issued by authorities.
