Fuel Train Derailed in Kibarani, Coast Province; Serious Traffic Disruptions in Changamwe, Mombasa County

05/20/2018 (Kenya) - Local media feeds have reported that on Saturday, 19 May, at approximately 2330hrs (2030 UTC) a fuel train derailed and overturned resulting in seven carriages being submerged in the sea near Kibarani, Coast Province. Road and railway traffic is reported as being seriously disrupted in Changamwe, Mombasa County, as a result of the incident. Authorities indefinitely closed a section of Makupa Causeway which has disrupted road and rail traffic to and from Moi International Airport (MBA). Clearing operations are underway.

Those in Mombasa County and Coast Province are advised to avoid the vicinity of the incident due to ongoing operations. Travellers heading to and from Nairobi are advised to use Mavueni Kaloleni Mariakani highway to access Mombasa to avoid delays. Travellers should monitor local media sources and amend their itineraries if necessary.
