Former Comoros President Under House Arrest Over Corruption Charges in Voidjou, Grande Comore; Military Presence On-Site

05/20/2018 (Comoros) - International and local media sources reported on Saturday, 19 May, the Interior Ministry of Comoros has placed former President Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi under house arrest in Voidjou, Grande Comore, over charges of corruption and undermining national security. Military personnel have been deployed to his house, preventing anyone from entering or leaving the building. The Assembly of the Union of the Comoros suspects the Former Comorian President personally profited from an illegal trade of Comorian passports sold outside of official channels. Investigators will question Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi at his home on Monday, 21 May, as part of the investigation.

Those in Grande Comore are advised to expected a heightened security presence in Voidjou and to remain apprised of the latest security-related developments through local media. Members are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of demonstrations and political gatherings due to the risk of exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence.
