05/20/2018 (India) - According to local media sources on Sunday, 20 May, at least 200 members of the Krishak Mukti Sangram (KMS) political group have been arrested during an ongoing meeting, organised by the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) party, in Guwahati, Assam state. The KMS members were reportedly protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, introduced in 2016, which allows illegal migrants from certain minority communities in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan to become eligible for Indian citizenship after six years of residence in India. According to local media, the meeting is likely to be attended by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah.

Clients in Guwahati are advised to minimise time spent in the vicinity of all demonstrations and political gatherings in order to limit exposure to potential crowd disturbances and incidental violence, as well as a heavy-handed police response. Monitor local media sources for updates on further protests on the issue.
