05/20/2018 (Senegal) - On Saturday, 19 May, the head of the Coordination des Etudiants de Saint-Louis student group, has called for peaceful nationwide marches to take place from Tuesday, 22 May to Friday, 25 May. At this time, no official information has been issued with further details of these marches. This comes following a week of unrest that started on Monday, 14 May, at the Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis as part of a movement to denounce the delay of scholarship payments to students. On Wednesday, 16 May, a student died as result of a police intervention to evacuate students occupying the refectory of the university, adding tensions to the protest.

Travellers in Senegal are advised to avoid the vicinity of all university campuses as the protests continue in order to mitigate the risk of exposure to incidental violence, opportunistic crime and heavy-handed law enforcement crowd control and dispersal techniques. Members should monitor local media for the latest updates on this recent wave of unrest.
