Senior Abu Sayyaf Group Member Arrested in Sulu Province

05/20/2018 (Philippines) - Local media sources reported that on Saturday, 19 May, security forces have apprehended a notorious member of the Abu Sayyaf group, Hashim Abtain, known as Abu Imam, along Serrantes Street in Jolo, Sulu Province. Hashim Abtain was wanted due to his alleged involvement in kidnappings and various crimes perpetrated as part of the Abu Sayyaf group activities. According to sources, Hashim Abtain was enjoying protection of local politicians allowing him to freely move within the province and actively participate in the operations of the Abu Sayyaf group in Sulu Province.

Travellers should be aware that Sulu and Basilan province remain strongholds of Abu Sayyaf. Travellers should be aware of the persistent threat from militant activity in various areas of the southern Philippines and are advised to coordinate any operationally-critical travel in the region with a trusted security provider.
