05/19/2018 (Palestinian Territories/ West Bank and Gaza Strip) - The president of Egypt, Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi, has announced the opening of the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip for the month of Ramadan. The announcement was made late on Thursday, 17 May from the president's official Twitter account. By Friday morning, travellers who had been approved by Hamas officials were being allowed to cross the border. The crossing was last opened for two days in February to allow Palestinians stranded in Cairo to return. Since al-Sisi came to power in 2014, the border has been largely closed.

Members in North Sinai and Gaza are advised to avoid non-essential travel via the Rafah crossing in the coming days due to the high demand for passage and risk of low-level militancy. Rafah has previously been targeted in militant attacks, including stabbings and improvised explosive, and as such, travellers in the area are advised to maintain a heightened level of vigilance and immediately report any suspicious activity to security forces. Monitor local media reports for further updates.
