Multiple Fatalities as Truck Overturns on Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar Highway in Gujarat State

05/19/2018 (India) - According to media reports, at least 19 people were killed and seven others injured after a truck carrying cement overturned on the Ahmedabad-Bhavnagar Highway near Dholera in Gujarat State on Saturday, 19 May. Police sources state the driver fell asleep at the wheel and subsequently lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a ditch. The driver later fled the scene of the incident.
Vehicular accidents are relatively frequent in India due to inadequate road maintenance in rural areas, poor driver discipline and limited enforcement of traffic rules. Those intending to conduct overland travel in India are advised to ensure that they utilise the services of a reputable service provider, checking safety standards and vehicle serviceability.
