05/19/2018 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - According to a statement released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Friday, 18 May, roughly 7,000 refugees from the Central African Republic (CAR) have arrived in the country over the past week, fleeing fighting between militant groups in Kouango, just across the border. The refugees are reported to have arrived near the remote village of Kanzawi, in Bas-Uele Province. It is the latest in a series of cross-border refugee movements, with an increase of over 80,000 refugees in less than a year.

Members in the Bas-Uele Province should avoid the vicinity of the border in the immediate to medium term due to the ongoing conflict. Travellers should monitor local media outlets for updates on the situation and liaise with in-country sources to remain apprised of security operations and any planned gatherings in their particular area of operations.
