05/19/2018 (Nigeria) - In a briefing on Friday, 18 May, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters announced the beginning of a new offensive against criminal gangs and militias in Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa and latterly Zamfara states. The operation, named 'Whirl Stroke', involves troop deployments in collaboration with other security agencies and aims to bring stability to areas that have experienced various conflicts. Operations have reportedly already led to the seizure of arms, as well as the death of a militant in Benue State.

Given the heightened tensions and an increased threat of intercommunal violence and banditry at this time, members in the affected states are advised to remain extremely vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity to security forces. Operationally-critical travel in rural areas should be conducted following a comprehensive localised threat assessment. Travellers should regularly review security management protocols to ensure that they remain commensurate with the evolving local threat environment.
