05/18/2018 (Guinea) - According to local media reports on Friday, 18 May, the national government of Guinea has resigned ahead of an expected cabinet reshuffle, a day after opposition parties suspended protests over a disputed election result. The reshuffle is President Alpha Conde's response to recent protests in the capital over education and a lack of political representation. On Monday related strike action brought trade and traffic to a standstill in parts of Conakry. Forming a new government with a different line-up of ministers is expected to help eases the tensions. It is currently unclear whether the protests and strikes will resume next week.
Members in Guinea are advised to avoid the vicinity of protests or any other large political gatherings in order to limit the chances of being affected by incidental violence, opportunistic crime and a heavy-handed security response. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information on travel disruption and should heed any directives issued by the authorities.
