05/18/2018 (Georgia) - According to local media sources on Thursday, 17 May, at least eight activists belonging to the right wing movement Georgian March have been detained by police following multiple demonstrations in Tbilisi. During the pro and anti-LGBT rights demonstrations several people have been injured, and LGBT as well as anti-LGBT activists arrested. One of the leaders of the 'Georgian March' movement has declared that if those detained are not released by 2300hrs (1900 UTC) members of the group and its affiliates will be mobilised and will carry out "radical action". While it is not yet clear whether members of Georgian March will carry out further demonstrations, general protests outside the building housing the Georgian parliament are likely.
Those in Tbilisi should avoid the vicinity of the demonstrations in order to lessen the chances of being affected by incidental violence and opportunistic crime. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information.
