Increased Security Presence During Trial of Extremist Cleric in Jakarta

05/18/2018 (Indonesia) - According to local media sources on Friday, 18 May, the South Jakarta District Court has increased the amount of security and police personnel inside its headquarters and the surrounding area, due to the upcoming trial of an extremist cleric later today. Aman Abdurrahman whose trial will be held after Friday prayers was a spiritual leader of an Islamic State affiliate group Jamaah Ansharud Daulah (JAD) and has masterminded the 2016 Jakarta bombings which resulted in the deaths of 8 and injuried 24 people. As many as 152 officers have been deployed in order to secure the court.
Those in Jakarta should avoid the vicinity of the court during the proceedings due to the possibility of violence and the heavy security presence. Travellers should monitor local media sources for any further information and heed any directives issued by the authorities.
