05/18/2018 (Syria) - According to international media sources on Friday, 18 May, there have been major explosions reported at Hama Airport, a military airbase in Hama governorate. Sources state that the explosions have occurred in weapons and fuel depots located at the airbase. Images show large plumes of smoke above the airbase. The cause of the explosions is not yet known but Israel has carried out a number of airstrikes against targets in the country during the past weeks. However, unconfirmed reports claim the explosions were accidental. Further updates on the situation are awaited.

Members are currently advised to reconsider all travel to Syria given the extreme conflict risk. All travel outside of secure compounds should be undertaken on an operationally-critical basis only in coordination with local authorities and trusted security providers. Those in Syria should continually review crisis management plans and security procedures to ensure they remain commensurate with the current local threat environment.
