05/17/2018 (Afghanistan) - An airstrike carried out by U.S. and Nato-led coalition forces overnight on Wednesday, 16 May led to the death of two IS militants, according to a statement released by the provincial government in Nangarhar province on Thursday, 17 May. Two heavy machine guns were also reportedly destroyed in the strikes, which took place in the Kakala locality of Haska Mina district in Nangarhar province. Like much of Afghanistan, Nangarhar province has been the scene of multiple clashes between security forces and IS and Taliban militants, with an escalation of the violence seen in recent weeks due to the Taliban's spring offensive.

Due to the threat of militant activity and ongoing security operations, all travel to the region should be avoided. Any operationally-critical deployments need to be conducted under the strictest possible security and journey management protocols. All movements outside of secure compounds should be undertaken in coordination with a vetted security provider and in liaison with local authorities and security forces. Security procedures and contingency plans should be regularly reviewed and updated accordingly to remain commensurate to the current situation on the ground.
