05/17/2018 (Central African Republic) - According to local news sources on Thursday, 17 May, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has taken control of Bambari after several sites in the city were attacked by gunmen allegedly from the Union for Peace in CAR (UPC) group. Several sites were attacked by the gunmen, including the MINUSCA base, a police station and several Non-governmental organisations (NGO's). A spokesman for the United Nations (UN), Vladimir Monteiro, said that MINUSCA forces were deployed and engaged the gunmen, quickly taking back control of the city. Eight people were killed in the fighting and at least six wounded were treated by doctors from Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF).

Following the recent violence, members in the CAR are advised to exercise an extremely high level of caution and avoid all political demonstrations and mass gatherings. CAR remains a high-risk security environment and all non-essential travel to the country should be avoided. Operationally-critical deployments should only be conducted following a thorough localised risk assessment and in conjunction with a vetted security provider.
