05/17/2018 (Nigeria) - Specialist intelligence sources on Thursday, 17 May report that a Nigerian-flagged supply vessel, the Brone Explorer, has been attacked by suspected pirates roughly 48 kilometres (26 nautical miles) south of Brass. The incident occurred on Wednesday at 0820hrs (0920 UTC) when the vessel was boarded by an unknown number of assailants. Four crew are reported to have been kidnapped and a number of items stolen. Unconfirmed reports also suggest another vessel was attacked earlier on the same day, though no further information is available on this incident.
Members in the region are advised to continue to employ security measures commensurate with mitigating risks in a high threat maritime environment. Vessels are advised to maintain anti-piracy watches and exercise vigilance at all times, especially during the late night or early morning hours when berthed at anchorages or ports as well as on local/regional voyages.
