05/17/2018 (Rwanda) - Heavy rains have washed away parts of the busy Gatuna-Gicumba road that links Rwanda to Uganda, according to official government sources on Wednesday, 16 May. Traffic has reportedly been diverted to the Ntungamo-Mirama Hills road to access Rwanda from Uganda. There was no confirmation from Ugandan officials as to when the road may reopen again, as the main areas affected are on the Rwandan side of the border. The Kigali-Gatuna highway is a major route that links Rwanda to Uganda before proceeding to the Kenyan seaport of Mombasa.

Members in the region are advised to review overland travel plans as itineraries may need to be revised to account for the road closure. Delays due to diversions need to be accounted for and other routes may experience knock-on effects from the closure. Members should monitor local media sources to remain up to date with the latest information on when the road may re-open.
