02/24/2018 (Congo (Kinshasa)) - Unconfirmed social media reports indicate that four people have been killed following clashes between security forces and gunmen in the Katoyi and Kasika neighbourhoods of Goma, North Kivu, on Saturday, 24 February. Residents have reported sounds of gunfire in the vicinity of the Katoyi military base, and security forces have closed several main roads in the surrounding area. The assailants, and all fatalities during the incident, are suspected to be Mai Mai militants.

Those in Goma are advised to avoid the Katoyi and Kasika neighbourhoods in the immediate term and monitor local media sources to remain apprised of any further incidents in the area. Essential travel in North Kivu should be subjected to the strictest possible security risk management procedures, including contracting armed private security. Personnel operating in the DRC are advised to regularly review their crisis management plans and security measures to ensure they remain commensurate with the local threat environment.
