02/24/2018 (Nigeria) - A Singaporean-flagged cargo vessel, identified as MV Kota Sahabat, was attacked by gunmen as she was operating 48 nm south of Bonny, Rivers State, at 1120hrs (1020 UTC) on Saturday, 24 February. MV Kota Sahabat increased her speed to 20 knots and transmitted a distress call. A Nigerian naval vessel responded to the distress call, and after 30 minutes the suspected pirates aborted their attack. There have been a number of suspected attacks in the region in recent weeks.

Those operating in Nigeria's maritime domain are advised to continue to employ security measures commensurate with mitigating risks in a high threat maritime environment. The threat from piracy applies to the entire offshore environment, particularly the Niger Delta region. The engagement of maritime security officers is common. Vessels are advised to maintain anti-piracy watches and exercise vigilance at all times.
